GMC Hummer Lemon Law

Posted by Adam Alexander | May 26, 2025 | 0 Comments

The 2024 and 2025 GMC Hummer EV models have garnered attention for their innovative features and off-road capabilities. However, some owners have reported recurring issues that could qualify their vehicles as “lemons” under Michigan's Lemon Law. This blog explores common defects in these models and explains how Michigan's Lemon Law can assist affected consumers.

Recent Cases

Over the past year, I have been retained by five Hummer customers to assert Lemon Law claims for various defects. Here are some of the issues my clients have experienced:

1. 2024 GMC Hummer EV

My client's Hummer lost power and locked up while he was in transit—a very dangerous situation that prompted him to seek legal advice. The vehicle has also required repairs for electrical defects, steering/suspension problems, and rear hatch malfunctions. It has been in the service department for over 50 days and counting.

2. 2024 GMC Hummer EV

This Hummer has undergone repairs for electrical, charging, and drivability defects. The primary issue is that my client cannot consistently charge the vehicle. He takes it to a charging station but receives multiple fault notifications indicating the vehicle is not receiving power. It has been out of service for at least 30 days, and the problems remain unresolved.

3. 2024 GMC Hummer EV

This Hummer had severe battery problems that made it literally impossible to start. After 131 consecutive days in the service department, the vehicle was eventually made operational again. Unfortunately, this resolution came far too late. The case is currently in litigation.

4. 2024 GMC Hummer EV

This client also experienced persistent battery issues. A “Service Lithium-Ion Battery” message appeared at just 2,800 miles, and the vehicle would not charge beyond 2%. The dealer replaced the rear drive motor power distribution cables. Additional problems included:

  • Rear hatch failing to open via remote
  • Software module updates and reprogramming (BCM, BSCM)
  • Charging interruptions with no notification
  • EV charger door intermittently stuck
  • Water leak around the driver's side window
  • Loud rattling from the roof

The dealer attempted to address these issues by performing TSB 24-NA-055.

5. 2024 GMC Hummer EV

This client initially faced insufficient battery capacity—the vehicle could only travel 150 miles on a full charge. Additional problems included:

  • “Driver Assist System” warning light at only 500 miles
  • Trunk opening intermittently
  • Persistent “SuperCruise” inoperability
  • Water leaks from the interior door handle on the driver's side (starting three months after purchase)

Despite ongoing service attempts, most issues could not be resolved permanently, and Lemon Law proceedings have been initiated.

Thousands of Complaints

Consumers across the country have reported similar issues with the new Hummer EV. These complaints have been documented by the NHTSA, automotive websites, blogs, and forums. Below is a summary of some of the most common complaints:

1. Rear Wheel Knuckle Debris (2025 Models)

Certain 2025 GMC Hummer EV pickups and SUVs were shipped with machining debris in the rear wheel knuckles. This issue can affect braking performance and requires inspection and possible re-tapping of the brake caliper bracket threads. GM has issued a service update, which authorized EV dealerships will perform free of charge.

2. Water Intrusion Issues

Some Hummer EVs have experienced water leaks leading to electrical failures. Water may enter through gaps in the A-pillar, affecting power windows, door locks, and mirrors. Additionally, moisture intrusion in electrical connectors has caused short circuits, compromising various vehicle controls.

3. Rear Drive Unit Recall (2024 Models)

A recall has been issued for certain 2024 models due to insufficient insulation in the rear drive unit's electric motors. This defect may cause a loss of propulsion, posing a crash risk. Dealers will replace the rear drive unit at no cost to the consumer.

4. High-Voltage System Failures

Some vehicles have displayed “Reduced Propulsion Power” warnings due to malfunctions in the drive motor generator or battery system, often requiring costly repairs.

5. Serial Data Gateway Module Failures

Certain 2024 models have suffered from software update issues caused by malfunctioning Serial Data Gateway Modules.

Conclusion

Owning a GMC Hummer EV can offer an exciting and cutting-edge driving experience—but buyers should be aware of potential defects and their legal rights under Michigan's Lemon Law. If you experience recurring issues, timely and well-documented action can help you secure a replacement or compensation.
